Forgot Password of Excel File – How to recover or break the password?

Hi Friends,

I had worked on an important assignment in Excel and had set a password for the file to protect it from misuse. However this was done a couple of months back. Today I had to continue working on the file for updating some information and generate resultant reports. However the password didn’t allow me to make any changes. I tried all passwords that i might have used in the recent past. No success. I have completely forgotten it. I need to open the Excel. Its really important.¬†How to recover or break the password?

Thanks in advance.

Try the following VBA code. This might help crack the password of your Excel worksheet.

    Sub PasswordBreaker()

Dim i As Integer, j As Integer, k As Integer

Dim l As Integer, m As Integer, n As Integer

Dim i1 As Integer, i2 As Integer, i3 As Integer

Dim i4 As Integer, i5 As Integer, i6 As Integer

    On Error Resume Next

    For i = 65 To 66: For j = 65 To 66: For k = 65 To 66

    For l = 65 To 66: For m = 65 To 66: For i1 = 65 To 66

    For i2 = 65 To 66: For i3 = 65 To 66: For i4 = 65 To 66

    For i5 = 65 To 66: For i6 = 65 To 66: For n = 32 To 126
    ActiveSheet.Unprotect Chr(i) & Chr(j) & Chr(k) & _

    Chr(l) & Chr(m) & Chr(i1) & Chr(i2) & Chr(i3) & _

    Chr(i4) & Chr(i5) & Chr(i6) & Chr(n)

    If ActiveSheet.ProtectContents = False Then

    MsgBox "One usable password is " & Chr(i) & Chr(j) & _

    Chr(k) & Chr(l) & Chr(m) & Chr(i1) & Chr(i2) & _

    Chr(i3) & Chr(i4) & Chr(i5) & Chr(i6) & Chr(n)

    ActiveWorkbook.Sheets(1).Select

    Range("a1").FormulaR1C1 = Chr(i) & Chr(j) & _

    Chr(k) & Chr(l) & Chr(m) & Chr(i1) & Chr(i2) & _

    Chr(i3) & Chr(i4) & Chr(i5) & Chr(i6) & Chr(n)

    Exit Sub

    End If

Next: Next: Next: Next: Next: Next

Next: Next: Next: Next: Next: Next

    End Sub

    Hi Nick,

It is pretty difficult to retrieve the password. One thing you can do. You can unlock the file by using third party software tools or online help. Please find the link attached.

    hope that works

    Hi Nitesh,

The code may Work, But question is to recover the password protected FILE / Workbook not Worksheet. It would be of great help if you can guide him some better way.

Brilliant Nitesh !! Thank you so very much. It worked wonders and now i am being able to work on the same sheet without any issue whatsoever. I am really sorry though if my question was not clear. I had meant the worksheet only and not the entire workbook. Would be glad though if you could also put up a way to crack an Excel Workbook too. You guys rock ! Thanks again.
